On page elements that may affect Google rankings
The German company Sistrix analyzed (OK... here is the english translation) the web page elements of top ranked pages in Google to find out which elements lead to high Google rankings. They analyzed 10,000 random keywords, and for every keyword, they analyzed the top 100 Google search results.

November 2006,
Google, Yahoo and Microsoft agreed to support the Sitemap protocol.
The Sitemap protocol is a standard that can help you to submit all
of your web pages to search engines.
Last week, Ask.com joined the team so that now all four major search
engines support the Sitemap protocol. In addition, search engines
can now automatically detect your Sitemaps file.

Is reciprocal linking dead? Of course not - but if you are requesting reciprocal links for the purposes of improving search engine rankings, you should probably reconsider. If you are still sending out those link swap request emails simply to improve your rankings you are probably wasting your own time and effort. However, reciprocal linking should still be a part of your web marketing strategy.
